Inspiration

Assignment submitted. Feedback received. And my evenings back all to myself again. Hooray!

I have learnt through the design course I am studying how important it is to allow a concept to develop... with time. This means the assignments can't be rushed.

I have also learnt that inspiration for a concept can be found anywhere and sometimes, in very random places. I have found instagr.am to be handy for collecting photos from the world around me and when I am stuck for ideas for a concept I refer back to these.

Here are a few images I have collected recently.

Taken in the, umm, bathroom at Madame Fling Flong in Newtown, Sydney. Love the vintage wallpaper on all walls and the mirror.

I would love to create a space with a cluster of copper lights like these lights spotted in a Bondi bar that look like bubbles suspended from the ceiling.

This is a rundown building now used as an open car park. The black and white graffiti on the wall is striking against the steel and concrete.

I am a little bit in love with this photograph in Inked magazine. The models' pale features contrast beautifully with her tattoos. The colour palette from this image reminds me of this Colour Burst post.

It should become mandatory to paint your door a bright colour. This one on the left is pretty fabulous.

Rather random I know but the colours here caught my attention.

Do you collect random images for 'inspiration'? Or do you use instagr.am in this way?

Riverview House: Bedroom lights + Blinds

Friday, July 15, 2011

I dropped into the Riverview House* recently to discuss ideas and see their progress. The owners have been working on this home since last year and it is coming together beautifully.

Here is what I have written about the home so far:

The house has been painted throughout in the paint colours above.

The kitchen and kitchen lighting was installed. The owners are looking for stools for the breakfast bench and bar area - something like these red Emeco US Navy bar stools perhaps.

We discussed materials for the blinds to be fitted throughout - grey block-outs with a transparent white layer over the top.

And while I was there I snapped a photo of the bedroom lighting the owner's chose. Isn't it fabulous?

*I'll refer to the home as the Riverview House because it has such beautiful views of a river. Lucky ducks!

A table setting for two

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

I have been in hibernation this winter without occasions to pull out the good china and dinnerware (do I really need an occasion??). I had this new setting hiding away in a cupboard and so over the weekend I set the table for two for a casual meal, just because.

Dinner set is from Anthropologie.

My Sunday morning

Sunday, July 10, 2011

It hasn't happened in a little while, that urge to pick up a paint brush, but the kitchen door needed a coat of paint and instead of white it is now blue. It is the same colour as the front door which is Dulux Dewpoint (1/2 strength).

One more coat to go...

On the wish list

I sold my old bedroom furniture months ago including the dresser, side tables and bed. I have a new bed now and mirrored bedside tables but I haven't found the perfect dresser yet.

No, I lie.

I have found the perfect dresser but the one I covet (above) is a little (a lot) out of my price range and therefore sitting on my wish list until I find something more affordable. Don't you think it would look great in the room though? Feel free to tell me it won't work in the bedroom as it looks above so that I can scratch it off my wish list!

Speaking of wish lists, what is on yours at the moment?

Fashionably Late Friday: Stockings and stripes and all things nice

Saturday, July 9, 2011

Oh, I'm around I promise. I unfortunately injured myself earlier in the week and have been resting up. Wish I were here instead telling you about all the fabulous and far away places I have been too but sadly I have no such tales to tell. I am back though and on my feet. How have you been?

During my time away I have made a few sneaky ASOS purchases. I can't resist the goodness that is the Australian dollar right now. I had fun with this dress pairing it with knee high stockings (or long socks).

It is cold here in Sydney so I am sneakily wearing nude stockings too. When I pair this outfit with my black pea coat I will be as warm as toast.

It was dark out by the time I took these photos but tried to fix them up as best I could by playing with Toycamera AnalogColour, a nice little application.

Fashionably Late Friday: Pink tights

Sunday, July 3, 2011

Hope your weekend has been fabulous so far. I took a trip to IKEA this afternoon and I have the decorating bug again. Am I crazy for enjoying the walk through the various displays (loved the 35 square metre 'home' display in the Homebush store!), sitting on the lounges, looking in the drawers (yes, I'm one of those people) and finishing the visit with a hot dog and donut.

On my mind are the IKEA FOTO industrial light pendants, fruit bowl, 365+ Brasa pendant lamp and did you know the large PS MASKROS pendant light now comes in a smaller size? Perfect for a kids room.

Back to fashion though and I have been playing dress-ups with coloured tights lately. I will miss wearing them come summer.
