Subway tiles

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

I went tile hunting over the weekend. I have been looking at updating the main bathroom and I love the look of subway tiles.

I will probably end up choosing white subway tiles but how tempting are these coloured ones?

  6. love the idea of colored ones! blue is so relaxing and then you could keep the rest of the bathroom neutral: like big fluffy white hotel towel!

  8. They are very cool! It mad to think that they were first used around 1904 by Heins & LaFarge architects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heins_%26_LaFarge) as part of their design for the New York subway stations...

I imagine these beautiful glazed tiles came about as the architects put a twist on the sweeping Guastavino-tiled arches and vaults ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guastavino_tile) they had created.

And in this day and age where everyone is going for bigger and bigger tiles in their bathroom it does make a refreshing change.

Even if you do go white you can always do something wild with the grout colour!

  10. We are about to embark on a major bathroom re-do and I've chosen white subway tiles on the walls and matt black hexagons on the floor (with black grout). I'm planning to add lots of colour with towels and am loving the Missoni 'Homer' range... delish.

Though those blue tiles are incredible!

  11. How about a light aqua color for the bathroom? Like almost white aqua color - it won't be overpowering, but will still project some color, andd goes with the orange hexagon tiles!

But, whatever you choose, I'm sure it'd look beautiful.
