The living area was one of the rooms in the house I never felt right about. I think it was the matchy-matchy furniture, the sin I committed of undercushioning (although I should probably add more cushions if I want to get that right) and the lack of colour.
These days I've added colour through cushions and artwork, mixed up the side table and coffee table / ottoman, that I wrote about over at lustable, so that they aren't matching, just little changes. The current rug has held up surprisingly well considering the food and eyeshadow that's been smooshed into it by a certain little person.
I'm looking for a new rug though, something not as warm as the current one for spring/summer. Do you do this? Swap rugs depending on the season? I don't usually but it does get really warm in my house and a lighter rug just seems to make sense.
Have you seen any great rugs out there? Do you think I should choose a sisal rug like I have in the other rooms i.e. the study or add more colour with a patterned rug? I still like this Akira rug by Designer Rugs but it might mean eating baked beans for a while to have it (should I?).

oooooohhhhh that Akira rug would look FABULOUS in there!
ReplyDeleteIt's so tempting Laura!
ReplyDeleteViv...I am totally inlove with your ottoman...divine!!
ReplyDeleteI would say definitely go for colour and bold...why not!!
I was thinking something black and white...bold stripes? works well for winter aswell.
There is a website buyster rugs that have a great selection of rugs..at really affordable prices. Super fast delivery.
Its all coming together beautifully x
I too am searching for "the" rug and it's impossible. Anthropologie over in the states have the most amazing rugs EVER and I don't know why we don't have anything close here?!
ReplyDeleteHello love, YAY FOR COLOUR! I think Akira's rug wouldn't do your room justice! you need some popping colour in there. POP I SAY!

I would love to have that aboriginal painting on your wall replicated in a rug on your floor, maybe even a blown up portion of it to play with scale... I think those colours would look totally delish against those beautiful wood floors you have.
and if the legs of the gigantor ottoman clashes with your new rug I'd just remove them and replace with something funky, nothin' like new legs!
Love your blog! For me, area rugs are the hardest to find, they are either too pricy or too tacky...I still have a bare floor in our living room which is just nagging for some warmth.
ReplyDeleteI like how fresh and bright your living room feels, i think I would still avoid anything to loud that you might grow tired of.
Any excuse for a new rug! I'd go for a pattern to disguise any future kiddy marks :) I've just bought a stunning b&w bold patterned rug that I think would go great with your furniture and make a wow statment. Can find it here ...

Viv - i love your ottoman! gorgeous...where is that from?? or did you get it made?
ReplyDeletei love sisal rugs, thats what we have in our family room...they are neutral and sturdy but i think a rug with colour would be great - you just need to make sure it feels/looks like it grounds everything and not just floating there...some rug places let you try them out overnight so thats a good thing?!
The Dinosaur Designs rugs at Designer Rugs are just gorgeous - big and bold. Anyway - baked beans are good for you ;)
ReplyDeleteI think you should go for the rug! One, it's gorgeous! Two, my daughter's name is Akira so you had me from the opening sentence! :)

Love the Akira rug but would go for something with even brighter and bolder colors. I agree with Textual Thoughts that you should find something that mirrors the aboriginal painting. Whatever you decide, definitely do something with color - no sisal.
ReplyDeletei think antique rugs are lovely, but it probably wouldn't look right in your house. we have a massive one in our living room that looks good in all seasons :)
