Living room changes

The living room has been the most challenging for me to work with. It all started when we first moved in. As I've mentioned before, we found it difficult to configure our existing furniture and create a combined living and dining area. We removed a large built-in and knocked out an adjacent wall to make the room feel larger and somehow managed to get all our furniture to fit without it feeling crammed.

Before photo of the wall where the TV sits.

Since then I've been stuck though. If you are like me, you read design magazines and blogs and look for inspiration wherever you can. You try to find your style, try out new things and hope it works and that you haven't wasted your time or money. When I post changes I make to my home here I'm never sure if I have gotten it right. I try though and I hope what I do encourages others to try too. That would be really great.

We purchased two IKEA mirrors. This is the first being hung.

But back to the living room. Over time I have collected a pile of living room images from magazines and the internet but I haven't been able to find that perfect image or combination of images to draw inspiration from. The trouble I have had and that I've mentioned before is with the big elephant in the room - the television. It's not easy finding nice images of living rooms with televisions in them. Usually the TV is cut from the picture or hidden or perhaps the people who own these rooms really don't have a TV?

Both mirrors hung. From various angles they reflect the view at the front of the house and they've made the living area feel more open.

Over the weekend we hung two large mirrors vertically to give the wall some interest, to reflect the nice view we have from the front of the house and to add symmetry because I'm a bit of a nut for symmetry. If we get sick of catching our reflections in the mirrors I can always hang some decorative paper over the mirrored part and I might even do that if I ever feel like a change.

The view from the entrance.

The next step is to mount the TV on the wall and add a few of our favourite things on top of the TV unit. I don't think I should wallpaper the TV wall because I like that the mirrors blend in. Wallpaper might look best on the wall closest to the entrance of the house.

I would love to know, is there a room in your home that you just don't know what to do with? What do you do when you are stuck for ideas?

  1. When I am stuck with an idea, I just stem back to keeping it simple. If I cannot make a decision I wait until I can. In between I rearrange things ALOT... :) I do like the mirrors flanking the tv, and I think the wall paper may be a bit much for that wall....so sounds like you are on the right track!

P.S. Your wood floors are just stunning!

  2. I'm obsessed with mirrored furniture and the mirrors framing the TV is genius. I'm stuck on the rooms I don't live in - the guest bedroom and the office. It's just hard to know what they NEED when when it comes down to it they don't NEED anything at all...

  3. I LOVE it Viv! Seeing the first image I was like 'ooooh I see Viv's problem, how will she solve this one?' and then hey presto you've done it! Well done you! I have that mirror above our mantlepiece which I love (and have featured on my blog before with a mantlepiece switcheroo)

Our tiny cottage is basically one big room with a bedroom and a bathroom - such an awkward space. I just got new couches delivered over New Years though and am in the process of styling/photographing the room so stay tuned!

  4. I too hate our TV being such a focal point but I've come to the realisation that I just have to decorate around it. Love the mirrors you've added to your lounge.

  5. A very clever solution, I really like the mirrors.

I am so with you on the TV issue. I love that you call it an elephant...ours is white, and I still think it looks like an elephant! Not sure of the solution yet (it lived in a cabinet at our old house so we could close it away when it wasn;t being used, but unfortunately that doesn;t work here!

  6. i know what you mean when you struggle with rooms i have my kids playroom upstairs.. so big and plain at moment but I'm leaving that till last.i love what you did with the mirrors,i think mirrors complete every scene you want to create.you can always add a wall art print that peels off when you get sick of it or hanging the TV on the wall and decorating the unit with your favorite stuff , floating shelves ?? what ever you decide, I'm sure it will be beautiful. i already like how it looks now :)

  7. Viv, I would never have thought to hang mirrors there - they look fantastic!

Living Etc had a feature about working around TVs a while ago that you might like to have a flip through: http://www.livingetc.com/decorating/how_to_disguise_a_flatscreen_tv_article_290347.html

Some of the stuff's are a bit mad but I do like the idea of incorporating a telly into a picture wall.

  10. I like the mirrors you choose! I ahve the same issues in my living room, we need some art wrk ASAP and we just got a new falt screen so we have to make the work in the room too. My husband wants to wall mount the tv, but I hate cords, so we'll see what happens...

    Happy 2010.

  12. I think it all looks lovely!

I know what you mean about TVs and other electronic uglies. My husband hates them in sight so built an 'entertainment center' out of barnwood to hide the TV...our friends call it the 'water closet' because it looks more like a mini-version of the WC in 'Slumdog Millionaire'! Our stereo is hidden behind an armchair and the speakers are in baskets ;)

  13. Mi Vida Bonita - I like that "keep it simple". Something to remember!

Jeremy and Kathleen - I suppose that applies to most of the rooms in my house. They don't really need anything either. It's just me needing to do something, haha.

Emma - I popped over and had a look. Your mantlepiece is beautiful and HUGE! Can't wait to see your new lounges.

    Amanda - Thank you!

Rosie - A white TV sounds nice. I haven't seen any in stores, but I haven't really been looking.

Melli's Designs - floating shelves, genius! I think that could work. I'll see what it looks like when the TV is on the wall. Thank you!

Lyndar - Thanks for the link. You are right. There are some ideas I personally wouldn't do and they sound pricey. I was thinking about a picture wall at first before I came across the mirrors.

    Katia - Thank you!

    Ivice - Welcome and thanks!

Mrs Chic - we are looking at hiding the cords behind the wall and dropping them down to the bottom so that they are hidden by the TV unit. Not sure how practical that is to do but we'll see. I'll post about it once we work it out.

Slices of Beauty - thank you and happy new year to you too!

Raquelita - I had to google it because I haven't see Slumdog, haha. Clever idea hiding the other electricals.

Thanks everyone for your comments. TVs don't bother me in other people's places and it wouldn't normally bother me in mine except that it is one of the first things you see when you walk into our home. It's a "Hi! Welcome to our home and look at what we are watching on our telly!". Ugh.

  14. I'm with you on the lounge room. But my main problem is my hubby's furniture he had before we met. I really hate his TV unit and coffee table.
And while he says I can decorate how I want he'd be devastated if I got rid of them.
What to do with chunky ugly wooden furniture?

  15. Thanks for stopping by Viv (and becoming a follower) I have been a big fan of ish and chi for so long. I'm off to find some cushions for the new couches...!

  16. Viv, I like your solution, why do I get the feeling its temporary though? I think mirrors are great for creating the illusion of space, yours look pretty where they are.
My mind is at a brick wall for my kitchen. Its narrow has a bench that curves around, its bizarre! I'II just leave it be til I come up with something, though it annoys me greatly!

  17. My living room is also my hardest room to figure out. We have lived in our home for 2 years and I have made changes to every room except the living room. My husband insisted on hanging our flat screen tv above the fire place and after some heated dicussions I gave in. I HATE it. Therefore, I refuse to do anything to that room b/c of the big black elephant above my gorgous mantle that I would like to decorate with a beautiful mirror. How can you decorate a mantle with that thing above it?

  18. your floor is the most amazing thing EVER. i die. living room looks great!

  19. Our house has 6 wide mirrors and that's excluding mirrors on dressers and closets. It's something that's not found on my friends' houses.

I love the mirrors on the TV. It's cool. Our TV is on the living room too. We're just renting that's why we don't have an entertainment room. That's where it's supposed to be.. nevertheless, it looks fine.

  20. Hi Viv! I just stumbled onto your blog today. Love your style and love what you've done in your living room. It's beautiful. The mirrors work perfectly.

Our layout is similar, just with windows where your mirrors are, and we're looking for a low tv bench similar to yours. May I ask where your tv bench is from?

    Thanks so much in advance!

  21. Hi there Anon! I had the tv bench custom made. The company that made it was in Taren Point but they've since closed down!! So sorry..
