Birthday cake

Looks like I will indeed be making Robert's first birthday cake. My mum found an old Woman's Weekly recipe book full of birthday cakes and she gave it to me to flip through to see if there is anything in it that I like.

I'm thinking of making the number '1'. I know it's not circus-themed but it looks easier to make than the clown recipes and I would hate to ruin the cake by being over ambitious.

Oh and guess what! In the comments of this post I mentioned that my mum once made me an amazing piano cake for my birthday which I still remember to this day.

I found the recipe in the book! I remember being so proud of it and gathered all my friends around the table to see it. I had just started piano lessons so this was a very fitting cake. I hope one day Robert is proud of what I make for him too.

Have a great weekend and see you next week! But before you go, please share, is there a birthday cake or a birthday party that sticks in your mind? What made it memorable for you?

I love this cookbook! My mum made me the piano, and heaps of others from in there. I just made my husband the swimming pool cake for his 28th birthday! It was awesome! And so much fun! Go wild!

Wow, that is the same piano cake my Mum made me when I was a kid! I loved that cake, we were just talking about it the other day. The picture looks just the same! I think it was probably my favourite of all the cakes Mum and Dad made us.

It' great to hear you are going to have a go at making the cake, I still think my parents were brilliant making some of the cakes they did, even Dad pulled a couple of amazing ones out, I'm sure it will be appreciated one day :) I hope anyway, that was my aim with this years effort:

I had a small hick-up when the back of the ship fell off while I was icing it - quickly remedied with a couple of skewers. They're much easier than they look, I think you'll do a great job. Looking forward to seeing the photos, Viv.

So glad to hear you had piano cakes too!

Shine a Little Light - how fun! I'd love a rubber ducky cake myself. Potato crisps for the beak and popcorn on the ducks head - how do they come up with those ideas?

Abby - That's one very cool pirate ship. Good job! I bet noone even noticed the little hick-up.

My mum used to make cakes using that cookbook too! We used to pore over it weeks before our birthday trying to decide what we wanted. Last year was my first attempt at making more than just a round or square cake for my kids. Here's a link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twocheekymonkeys/3964381605/in/set-72157622353373681/

I've since made a teddy bear and a butterfly cake. I thought the latter was going to be a total disaster but it's amazing what icing and decorations can cover up!

This book is in our family too...choosing the cake my mother would make was all part of the fun!

My brother had the rocket one year, but we were living in Borneo and the heat created a near disaster...the rocket fell over! But with a little more magic with the icing, only we knew! My poor, dear mother!

Such wonderful memories you're creating for your beautiful little family.

I made the pig from that book for my year 10 cooking class! It's the edition they had in my local library.

I love the '1'. It's a great cake to start with. Before long you'll be making pianos and more.

This book was a big part of my childhood also - my sister and I used to spend weeks before our birthdays discussing our cake options : ) Both our birthdays are in March so it was a busy month for Mum!

I like the "1" cake. The way it's decorated, it would fit right into your circus theme!

The best birthday cake my mom made when I was young, was from a box actually. It was vanilla with vanilla icing that had these rainbow dots in it. It was simple, but it made me so happy!

I think the '1' cake looks like something littlies would love - especially with all those Smarties covering it. My Nanna used to make us a different themed cake each year and I remember her making that same piano cake when I was 9. I thought it was the best cake ever!!

love the classic AWW cakes! i think the number 1 would be lovely - you could do all red, white (and blue?) smarties. that is the colour theme, yes?

Oh, so many lovely cake memories here.

That 1 is perfect for a circus themed party!

My strongest memory is a cake my Mum made for my 3rd or 4th birthday, and was a red tractor! It was so awesome, right down to the yellow icing covered bales of hay that surrounded it!

I'm from India and that was my favorite book when I was a kid. My aunt had it and she made me the Number 1 cake for my first birthday and the zoo cake for my second! But i think my favorite cake in the book by far is the dressing table, the tea party and the castle cakes!

When I was very little I thought I was helping mum by cutting out the cake shapes in this very same cookbook, so that she could use them as a template maybe - I really don't know what I was thinking! I was very little. To make matters worse, the cookbook was on loan from a friend so she had to buy another to replace it. Poor mum!

I love hearing your birthday cake stories! Is it nuts that I'm wishing for a kids birthday cake for my next birthday? Why not!

lindsey - it's mainly red & white but I'll throw in some yellow, blue and green smarties for something fun.

Julie - that's so funny. I bet your mum was impressed!
